Painting the Town: Learning Italian Art

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Italy is the world leader in music, art history, interior design, furniture design, culinary arts, and several other fields. Those planning a career in such fields benefit greatly from knowing how to learn Italian art.

Italian art has nearly always been closely allied with the intellectual and/or religious currents of its day while retaining its own remarkable past as a continual source of inspiration. Italian art history is divided into different periods: the Etruscans, Romans, Byzantines, Early Middle Ages and Romanesque, Gothic period, Renaissance, Mannerism, Modernity, post- modern Italian art and contemporary art.

Italian art is manifested in numerous forms, like the outstanding Byzantine mosaics in the churches, amphitheatres and temples of Greeks and Romans, to visual arts showcased in differenct art galleries. Italy is the land of Donatello, Tintoretto, Titian and Giorgione, all of them are painters with extraordinary talent.

Raphael and Michelangelo, also both Italians, were commissioned painters and sculptors. Ichelagelo was the sculptor of La Pieta in the Basilica of St. Peter, the architect of the Dome of St. Peter and the painter of the Sistine Chapel. Giotto was an important artist whose works would include the Bell Tower in Florence and frescoes in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.

Another great sculptor, architect, painter, stage designer and comedy writer is Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His sculptures include the renowned Apollo and Daphne and the Ecstacy of St. Theresa. Bernini also created the square with the colonnaded wings in the Basilica of St. Peter. The Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona was also one the monumental fountains he created in the plaza. Canaletto was also one of the best sculptors. He made the Herculaneum and Pompei statue. While Antonio Canova created the Cupid and Psyche sculpture.

Futurists artists like Boccioni, Balla, Carra Giorgio de Chirico, Renato Guttuso and Alberto Burri. Materials for their art works would include sacking, plastic and tar. The materials are considered to be the content in their own right it does not necessarily symbolize anything but rather focused on the states of mind, suffering and torment.

As mentioned earlier, Italian regions are very diverse when it comes to different aspects of Italian culture. It is a great experience to discover great art galleries in small towns in Italy. Rome, Naples, Milan, Florence and Venice are several of the places that are literally endowed with amazing masterpieces.

Since Italian art involved architecture, we would be focusing more decorative art- which would be mainly paintings and some sculptures. A sample place would be Siena which is located in Tuscany. The magnificent Palazzo Pubblico houses the Museo Civico where highlights include works by Simone Martin.

Siena makes a good base from which to head out on the trail of one of the Tuscan greats artist and mathematician, Piero della Francesca. The town museum on Piazza Garibaldi housed two masterpieces: Piero’s Madonna della Misericordia altarpiece and his haunting Resurrection which shows Christ emerging from his tomb amid sleeping soldiers.

A Piero painting is a big attraction in the majestic town of Urbino. The Palazzo Ducale houses the Galleria where aside from Piero paintings there are also paintings by Crivelli, Verrocchio and Piero’s fellow pioneer of perspective, Uccello.

Knowledge of the language will help tourists and travellers to have the comfort of being into different kind of situations, like ordering at Italian restaurants, asking for directions, looking for accommodations in Italy, negotiate cheaper prices for souvenirs or items, meet and talk with the natives. It is prevalent in most countries, that locals or natives show appreciation for people or travellers that are trying to learn the culture, especially their language.

Tricks For Higher Chances For Winning Powerball

Friday, July 31st, 2009

For years people have been playing Powerball for several reasons. For some it is a simple distraction from the busyness of their normal day. For others it is a way to experience a little thrill during their day. For others, it is a game of chance that they believe someday will pay out huge rewards for being loyal in their playing. PA Powerball players have reason to believe this.

Several times after the PA lottery results multiple winners are announced as the grand prizewinners of that state’s Powerball. So much so, that Pennsylvania is becoming a local hot spot for people wanting their weekly Powerball tickets. A few years ago, it didn’t just happen once. For one couple that had played the same Powerball numbers for over 15 years finally had their numbers chosen for the big winnings, which they shared with three other couples. A year later, the same couple cashed in again, from buying at the same place by winning the Powerball again.

Powerball is a game of random chance. That doesn’t mean that you have to leave it all up to chance. There are some ways that you can increase the odds of winning in your favor by following a few guidelines. The first tip you should really take into consideration is to buy your own tickets yourself. Don’t leave it up to a neighbor or friend. If you do hit the winning numbers, you might have a bit of a battle on your hands to collect. Second, always buy your tickets from a store that has won before and has a high customer rate. Last, play your numbers. A lot of times people will get sidetracked into playing other numbers, or told that some numbers win more than others. Just play your numbers.

State lotteries can also take the form of scratch off tickets. These are bought in the same places as the Powerball tickets and can lead to big winnings if you buy the right tickets. Of course, the higher denomination tickets pay out more, but it is not uncommon to have a $5 or even $20 winning ticket from time to time. These tickets are immediate and you don’t have to wait for any state results like the PA lottery results. It could be that you walk into a store and come out with a ticket worth a few thousand dollars in your hand that is a scratch away.

Should You Spend Your Money On Powerball Tickets?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

You’ve heard by now that several states are using lotteries and Powerball numbers in order to both add revenue and offer a way for people to win large jackpots. These state run lotteries have been around for quite some time and can be run in different ways according to the state. These tickets are relatively inexpensive, if you only buy a few of them at a time, but can also lead to a very large winning.

In recent years people who have played Powerball games, the PA Powerball lottery is a great example of this, have landed on million dollar payouts. Their lives are changed instantly. Powerball works on the principle of random numbers being picked from a rotating tub. Once the numbers are drawn, the ticket holder can then check to see if the numbers they chose match up to the ones drawn. If they do, or even if a few of them match, you could be a money winner.

Some people play the same numbers for years. It could be a special date; an anniversary, a locker combination, favorite numbers, or just some random numbers chosen at some point in time and were never changed. These numbers are entered into the machine at the state lottery agency (most likely in the form of a convenience store) and printed onto a ticket the holder keeps until the drawing.

When the jackpots are especially large, at times reaching into the hundreds of millions of dollars, the lines formed can stretch for blocks. The thrill of perhaps landing on the right numbers can be an amazing draw for getting in these lines. Most states will draw numbers twice a week helping people have more of a chance of winning. States will also have scratch tickets available for people also, but this is a different type of lottery than Powerball. Scratch tickets can range from $1 to up to $20 a ticket, while most Powerball tickets are $1.

Of course, you could always go the other route to reaching your goal of financial independence by winning in the casinos in Las Vegas. Places like the Paragon Casino give people the opportunity to risk their money on the chances of winning thousands in return. While most of these games work through random chance, they are different than Powerball or lotteries because of the larger chances or losing more money. Casinos are also different in that they offer experiences instead of just chances to win money.

Theater Arts Of Ballet

ballet steps

The ancient Greeks were known to be great warriors and artists. People were known to be blessed with talents in fields such as theater, painting, sculpturing, and poetry. Theater itself was one field which included many other arts such as acting, singing, dancing, writing, and poetry. This art was later on reflected in other countries such as Indian, China and Indonesia. Ballet is a special dance form basically inspired from Greek and Roman theaters to take its full form in 1400s in Italy and France. Although dance was suppressed by the churches this art spread to Russia and America with a version of their own.  Ballet was driven from the Latin
word “Ballere” which meant dance.

During the renaissance period in Italy, ballet was the product of court pageantry. Domenico da Piacenza was a well-known artist to have mastered arts. He used to teach the nobles and other people who used to perform in the court. These court musicians and dancers used to perform on great occasions like weddings. They were later joined by the ballet De Cour which consisted of dancers who wore elegant costumes and sang beautiful songs. This art was transferred from Italy to France when Catherine de Medici of France married Henry II of Italy. She made great contribution to help flourish the art in France.

It was under the rule of Louis XIV, performance art was given great importance as he himself had a liking for it and was responsible to entrench what is known now as Paris Opera Ballet. Jean-Baptiste Lully was the favorite Italian composer of the king. He had a great understanding of the history of ballet, musical songs and graceful dance. He made great contribution to ballet which was of utmost importance even after many years.   He along with another French writer Moliere created Comedie-ballet. He was responsible to combine Italian and French ballet. French ballet consisted of instrumental music at first and then vocal music was added to it.

In the late 1800s ballet began to be practiced in Russia, America, Denmark, and Paris. Artists who were responsible for this were Marius Petipa, August Bournonville and Jules Perrot. Stories with Middle Eastern touch were also written. Ballets such as The Talisman and Pharaohs’ Daughter became very famous with the people. Many plays of William Shakespeare like Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet were interpreted through ballet steps.

The most important feature of ballet is that the thighs rotate in an outward direction from the hips. Performers who are interested in learning this art are expected to undergo very strenuous health workouts. It ends along with getting the high school degree. Some exams are practical and some are theoretical. Ballet incorporates French words which are used to name the movements and steps. The dancers should know French in order to be more familiar. This also means that the terms used for the steps are universal. It’s very important for the artist to have a strong lower body especially the legs and the abs. strong legs are necessary for the en pointe position and strong abs are necessary for turning the body. A dancer can also create an illusion of long or short hands and legs. If the limbs are placed near the back of the body they appear short and when they are brought forward the limbs seem to be longer.

A lot of physics is involved in ballet. The dancer should create an illusion that she or he is opposing gravity. The dancer’s body acts like a parabola or a projectile in the air and gravity works on the center of mass of the body. Like they can act as if they are suspended in air by jumping with their arms and legs suspended and head lowered. But the landing should be carefully done; otherwise the dancer could fall down, hurting one self which would also affect the show. A precaution that can be taken in such cases is to have a shock absorbent floor. Another technique which can be extremely hazardous is the rolling of the foot from toe to heel with knees bend. Such type of training calls for the help of professionals. Despite all these complications involved in performing ballet, it remains one of the most popular performing arts in the world.

Magic Trick Tips

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

A magician is an artist. Every trick is a masterpiece and every trick requires a lot of patience and time to learn. Here are some tricks to help you improve your tricks.

1. Practice Makes Perfect

This can be the good habit that saves you from humiliation down the line. You’ve learned a new trick and have shown it to an audience and mesmerized them, should that stop there? No! A magician always practices his bag of tricks, no matter how much he has mastered them. A lot of magicians stop practicing and improving at home and run the risk of being bored with their own trick and thereby boring the audience.

You should set some time to practice your magic. After all you did spend a lot of money at that magic shop! 5 hours each week, whenever you have time will really help you advance your talent Remember that time spent perfecting your tricks is not time wasted.

2. Videotape Your Act

Videotaping your act will let you see how the audience perceives you. The video camera is your audience, so don’t be shy. Watching yourself perform will let you see hiccups you didn’t know your audience was seeing. Always keep in mind your angles with regard to the video camera. If you tend to perform up on a stage put the camera lower, pointing up at you It will help in your practice and in knowing if a trick is effective.

3. Ask for Help

One magician performs for his opinionated brother to get real feedback. If you have a family member that you can trust to be honest and critical, it can help you survive hecklers in your own show. But keep in mind, that you better be tough to be able to take that kind of criticism from a family member. If not, join a magic club.

4. Identify Opportunities

You might feel that you are far too busy to improve your act, but really you should take advantage of every possible opportunity that comes your way. Going on a camping trip? This is your opportunity to try out new tricks and new stories to tell with your tricks! Take their advice. Or better yet tell them about an amazing new magic trick you are thinking about purchasing and seeing what they think.

5. Never stop learning

Don’t try learning another trick until you’ve mastered your current trick. There are at least dozen ways to use a svengali deck. Why not become a svengali expert while improving your magic skills? Just like the artist mentioned above, practice your trick until it becomes your own masterpiece.
A magician will always find ways to learn new tricks. It is important to realize that a trick is not something to be taken for granted. Practice is what separates the really great magicians from the casual performers! This is the ultimate way to ensure success as a magician.

How to Sell Art - What to Do When You’re Ready to Say ‘Sell My Art Work’

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Do you consider yourself a Monet or Picasso just waiting for your work to be discovered? It can be very stressful being a starving artist if your passion is your art, but you aren’t able to make a living at it. Yet you may not have even investigated or researched how to sell your art.

There are many venues and opportunities for artists to explore to get the word out about their work. Before knowing which venue might be best for you, there are a few steps to take.

First you need to develop your own unique artistic identity. Think of this as branding yourself. How do you wish to be known. You must have a memorable and recognizable identity before you worry about how to sell art.

You should also set goals for yourself. What do you want to accomplish with your art. Is it a hobby or lifelong passion in which you intend to make a full time living. Determine the answer to that before you try to find out how to sell your art.

You should determine the target market for your art. What are their demographics? Of course, you aren’t limited to your local area alone these days because, with a web presence, you can easily use the reach of the internet to even learn how to sell art online.

Don’t rely only on the internet, however, as it can be very impersonal. You will also wish to network with other artists and galleries in order to become a serious and successful artist.

One thing you will most certainly need is patience. If you are committed to your goal, don’t give up and be sure to give your artistic expression time to blossom.

After you’ve done all of the pre-planning as outlined above, set goals and established your brand, then you can move ahead with the marketing and learn how to sell your art.

Legendary rapper Ice Cube Turns 40

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

O’Shea Jackson (born June 15, 1969), better known by his stage name Ice Cube is an African-American rapper, actor, screenwriter, and producer. He began his career as a member of the rap group N.W.A along with group leader Eazy-E, and later launched a successful solo career in music and cinema.
In 1992, he married Kimberly Woodruff, with whom he has four children, and converted to Islam. From the mid-1990s onwards, Cube focused on acting, and his musical output has slowed down considerably. He remains one of the most visible West Coast rappers, having helped originate gangsta rap.

Ice Cube was born O’Shea Jackson in South Central Los Angeles, California, where he was raised, the son of Doris (née Benjamin), a hospital clerk and custodian, and Andrew Jackson, who worked as a groundskeeper at California State University. His cousin is Teren Delvon Jones, also known as Del
tha Funkee Homosapien, of Deltron 3030, Gorillaz and Hieroglyphics. At age sixteen, Ice Cube developed an interest in hip hop music, and began writing raps in Taft High School’s keyboarding class. He attended the Phoenix Institute of Technology in the fall of 1987, and studied Architectural Drafting. With friend
Sir Jinx, Cube formed the C.I.A., and they performed at parties hosted by Dr. Dre. In an interview with well-known British broadsheet newspaper, The Guardian, Ice Cube stated he is a Muslim, having converted sometime in the 1990s.

In 1987 Cube and Dr. Dre released the EP My Posse, under the alias CIA and the county police. After the collaboration, Cube showed Eazy-E the lyrics to “Boyz-n-the-Hood”. Eazy-E, although initially rejecting the lyrics, eventually recorded the song for N.W.A. and the Posse, the debut album for the group N.W.A (short for Niggaz With Attitude) that included him, Cube, Dre, and other rappers MC Ren and DJ Yella.

Recent years: In 2004, his hit singles “Check Yo Self”, “It Was a Good Day” and affiliated song “Guerrillas in tha Mist” with Da Lench Mob appeared on popular video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas playing on fictional radio stations.

In late 2005, Ice Cube and Emmy Award winning film maker R. J. Cutler, teamed up to create the six-part documentary series titled Black. White., which was broadcast on cable network FX. In May 2006 Ice Cube accused Oprah Winfrey of not welcoming rappers on her show, and specifically, for not inviting him to the show when the rest of the cast of films that he participated in were invited. Cube’s other movie projects include Teacher of the Year, released in 2007, and “The Extractors”, released in 2008. Cube has also completed Are We Done Yet?, the sequel to 2005’s successful “Are We There Yet”?

There is obviously much more to Ice Cube’s life and career.  You can learn more by playing Ice Cube trivia, Why We Thugs Ice Cube or music Ice Cube at MastersOfTrivia.com.

From Black Jack to Lotto: A New Hobby

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Need a little spice in your life? Are you trying to find a hobby but just can’t pinpoint the right one? Well, look no further! You may have just hit the jackpot! The lottery jackpot that is. Depending on whether you like social interaction or a quite night at home, you may enjoy a simple party poker download or a trip to the nearest casino for something different. Even if you are not an expert at lottery type games or you don’t feel confident in your poker hand, you can have a ton of fun and may even end up winning a bit of extra spending money! Bars and casinos are full of fun lotto type games that will keep you and your friends or loved one entertained for hours on end. Playing a lottery game such as keno or power ball doesn’t have to cost you much but will lift your spirits and entertain even the stingiest of souls. If you are in to cards and thinking games, casinos have excellent game playing tables. Texas Hold ‘Em poker, Black Jack and Roulette are just a few of the more popular games that are played on a regular basis all over the country. There are beginner tables you can try out if you are new to the games and prefer to play low stakes or if you are advanced in your game playing abilities and strategies, many casinos have high stakes tables and offer a more challenging game to the veteran card players.

Many play their hands and take their bets based off of past lotto results. Strategy in lotto and card games becomes a mind stretching, exciting part of casino life after you get the hang of your favorite game. Some individuals even take classes or short courses to increase their knowledge of lotto and card gaming techniques. For example, some Texas Hold ‘Em card players become so proficient with their game that they can literally read another players hand simply by seeing the facial expressions on the other players face, watching if the player bets on the first round or not and remembering tiny subconscious movements the other players display. But whether you are playing the PA state lottery or an obscure lottery or casino, you are bound to have a good time and enjoy yourself! You don’t have to be a fanatic to enjoy a good night out to a casino or a quiet afternoon home with your lotto ticket.
