Anime Takes On A Whole New Life With Anime Cosplay Costumes

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Born from large gatherings and events full of fanatical anime fans, Cosplay Costumes has become an international hobby with thousands of followers. As Anime has grown in popularity in the past two decades so has the hobby of cosplay. Cosplay is derived from the English words ‘costume’ and ‘play’ and is used to describe the hobby of crafting highly detailed and accurate costumes of beloved anime and manga characters.

In the recent years, largely from 1998 and beyond the amount of public acceptance of cosplay has increased. Today cosplay is a popular scene in public settings such as parties, nightclubs and video game shows. In some parts of Japan such as the Akihabara district there are even cosplay cafes.

Attention to detail is perhaps the most challenging and important part of a cosplay costume. The accurate depiction of the Manga character being portrayed is the most critical part of the costume itself. At many anime conventions there are contests where the accuracy and creativity of cosplay costumes are judged and winners are awarded based on their costume’s accurate depiction of character.

Cosplay costumes require a myriad of craft skills to perfect. From metal to leather to simple linens the materials needed are varied. Getting the most precise and accurate costumes requires a wide range of creative talents and skills to truly depict the unique and often elaborate costumes worn in anime.

Cosplay trends change on a monthly and yearly basis as pop culture and anime changes. Due to the international success of some major film franchise in the past years some fantasy and sci-fi characters have become very popular cosplay figures. Characters from Star Wars and the Harry Potter series are among some of the most popular non-anime characters to see featured as Amazing Cosplay.

Evolving from within the hobby of cosplay itself are some subset groups of enthusiasts who have taken cosplay in new directions. Crossplay for example is a type of cosplay where the players themselves dress up as characters of the opposite sex. However since anime tends to feature characters wearing a variety of unique and not necessarily gender-specific clothing, this is not seen as all that odd.

Cosplay has grown so much in popularity that in its modern incarnation, Cosplay Characters has magazines and websites devoted to it. These resources feature detailed instructions on costume making and materials as well as images of costumes from past conventions. Conventions routinely allow ‘cameko’ or ‘camera boy’ photographers who dedicate themselves to photographing cosplay events.

Anime does not appear to be losing steam anytime soon and along with it; cosplay is only becoming more popular. The dedicated Manga fans and enthusiasts of people continue to support Cosplay and pave the way for future craftsman to expand this unique hobby. Expressing the highest level of multi-discipline art and culture, cosplay is an intriguing and fun way for anime fans to truly express themselves.

DRESSED TO THRILL: Costumes, fancy dresses

Did you know that costume parties were thought scandalous in England for a long time, as men and women associated them with low values? In the United Stats, however, costumes and fancy has, primarily, as of the huge appeal of Halloween and pantomimes. Most of my favorite childhood recollections are of Halloween costume parties, where I guess I pretty much covered the entirety of superheroes. The best bit is that fancy dress are still an integral part of our Halloween, though we’ve grown too old for trick-or-treating rituals.

In the West, fancy dress parties are more probably to have originated in Britain. The masked affairs of the 18th century were perhaps the first costume affairs. Under Queen Victoria they introduced costume affairs, which then became more and more popular. In modern times, both in Britain and in the US, costumes are now the center of many modern celebrations. So many of our favorite bits from films involve costume parties, don’t they? Remember Mean Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Birdcage?

Scary or funny?

No surprise then that costumes and fancy dresses have become a big industry to cater to the demands of the people. There are two chief reactions you could want to expect from people when you decide to appear in fancy dress. You either desire to frighten them, or elicit laughter. Consequently, the best liked costumes are those of characters from horror or comedy movies. Dracula is a perennial favorite, as are Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. Of late, there is popularity in TV programs, like Friends.

Pick and choose

So where can you get yourself a costume? First, naturally, you must choose what you wish to turn up as, after carefully evaluating the theme of the affair. When you’ve done that, you have 2 options. You can go to a good fancy dress outlet and try out a few and finally decide on one. Who knows, when at the place, you could feel so taken with a particular outfit that you may give up your first fancy dress thought completely. Your second choice would be look for a dress online, from the many sites that have costumes. Though this is evidently the simpler choice, it can become more complicated than it looks. Especially if your outfit arrives late, or if you find that it does not fit or is made of sub-standard cloth, or that it is not how you had imagined it to be. There is the expression, seeing is believing.

Make your own

Of course, you can construct your own fancy dress ensemble. This is particularly useful for pantomimes, where you can make Robin Hood outfits out of old leggings, and add on trimmings to leather jackets and feathers to old hats. If you happen to oen some needlework skills as well, you can give old dresses or costumes a whole new look and casually slip into a brand-new persona without forking out more than a few dollars. Now how about that —- self-made costumes —- for a new party thought?
