Anime Takes On A Whole New Life With Anime Cosplay Costumes

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Born from large gatherings and events full of fanatical anime fans, Cosplay Costumes has become an international hobby with thousands of followers. As Anime has grown in popularity in the past two decades so has the hobby of cosplay. Cosplay is derived from the English words ‘costume’ and ‘play’ and is used to describe the hobby of crafting highly detailed and accurate costumes of beloved anime and manga characters.

In the recent years, largely from 1998 and beyond the amount of public acceptance of cosplay has increased. Today cosplay is a popular scene in public settings such as parties, nightclubs and video game shows. In some parts of Japan such as the Akihabara district there are even cosplay cafes.

Attention to detail is perhaps the most challenging and important part of a cosplay costume. The accurate depiction of the Manga character being portrayed is the most critical part of the costume itself. At many anime conventions there are contests where the accuracy and creativity of cosplay costumes are judged and winners are awarded based on their costume’s accurate depiction of character.

Cosplay costumes require a myriad of craft skills to perfect. From metal to leather to simple linens the materials needed are varied. Getting the most precise and accurate costumes requires a wide range of creative talents and skills to truly depict the unique and often elaborate costumes worn in anime.

Cosplay trends change on a monthly and yearly basis as pop culture and anime changes. Due to the international success of some major film franchise in the past years some fantasy and sci-fi characters have become very popular cosplay figures. Characters from Star Wars and the Harry Potter series are among some of the most popular non-anime characters to see featured as Amazing Cosplay.

Evolving from within the hobby of cosplay itself are some subset groups of enthusiasts who have taken cosplay in new directions. Crossplay for example is a type of cosplay where the players themselves dress up as characters of the opposite sex. However since anime tends to feature characters wearing a variety of unique and not necessarily gender-specific clothing, this is not seen as all that odd.

Cosplay has grown so much in popularity that in its modern incarnation, Cosplay Characters has magazines and websites devoted to it. These resources feature detailed instructions on costume making and materials as well as images of costumes from past conventions. Conventions routinely allow ‘cameko’ or ‘camera boy’ photographers who dedicate themselves to photographing cosplay events.

Anime does not appear to be losing steam anytime soon and along with it; cosplay is only becoming more popular. The dedicated Manga fans and enthusiasts of people continue to support Cosplay and pave the way for future craftsman to expand this unique hobby. Expressing the highest level of multi-discipline art and culture, cosplay is an intriguing and fun way for anime fans to truly express themselves.
